Man thrown from four-wheeler dies; passenger badly injured

Lindsey Reader, a 20-year-old Nome man, was killed about 1:30 a.m. Monday in a four-wheeler crash, Alaska State Troopers said.

Reader was pronounced dead at the scene, near Council, an unpopulated area about 73 miles east of Nome, troopers spokesman Greg Wilkinson said.

James West III, 23, also of Nome, who was riding with Reader, suffered severe facial injuries in the crash, Wilkinson said. He was taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage and was listed in critical condition, a nursing supervisor said.

Wilkinson said the two men were riding together on a four-wheeler when they apparently hit a pothole or some other type of obstacle and were thrown from the vehicle. West told troopers that Reader was driving, Wilkinson said.
